FAQs
I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Does going to counseling mean I'm weak?
Absolutely not! It's actually just the opposite. Everyone needs a little help now and then. People who come to therapy are smart enough to recognize the need and they have the courage to reach out. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
One big difference is that friendship is a two way street and counseling is not. As my client, you will never have to worry about me or my feelings like you would a friend. Counseling is a time specifically for and about you. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you get to know yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about anybody else knowing your business.
What about medication?
Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals. If you think you might benefit from medication in addition to your therapy, I can refer you to an excellent psychiatrist or nurse practitioner.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Please don't feel intimidated by therapy. It's just having a conversation with someone who cares. Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it always looks different with each individual. I will do my best to make you feel comfortable and safe during our time together.
How long will it take?
Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling takes for you to accomplish your goals varies. We all develop and progress on our own timeline. Some clients just need a few sessions and some will stay in therapy for years.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
